1. Heliosphysics Geospace Management Operations Working Group (MOWG) looking
for new members

We are looking for new members for the Heliosphysics Geospace MOWG, an
informal group who helps NASA HQ discipline personnel maintain a close
relationship with the space science community.

Management Operations Working Groups (MOWG's) meet informally 2-3 times a
year and the hard-copy result of a MOWG meeting is put forth as a series of
"Findings". MOWG discussions include, but are not limited to, the competed
Research and Analysis program including restructuring, flight missions
including senior reviews, launch vehicle capability, decadal surveys,
planning, and communications. MOWG products may include analytical papers,
staff analyses, or other types of work products that explain or analyze a
situation or a set of facts or data, but do not specifically recommend a
particular decision or course of action.

MOWG Findings are submitted by the MOWG Chair to the Heliophysics Advisory
Subcommittee
<http://science.hq.nasa.gov/strategy/NAC_sci_subcom/heliophysics.html> ,
which is a standing subcommittee of the NASA Advisory Council (NAC)
<http://www.nasa.gov/offices/nac/home/index.html> ; it also supports the
advisory needs of the NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD)
<http://science.hq.nasa.gov/> .   The membership of the MOWG consists of
12-15 leading scientists with relevant expertise drawn from industry,
academia, and government institutions. Members will generally be appointed
to three- or four-year terms, and approximately one third of members will be

MOTIVATION

The problem of the faint early Sun has been around for many years, and it
boils down to this: We presume that the Sun started its life on the zero-age
main sequence (ZAMS) with essentially the same mass that it has today, given
the low flux of the solar wind, and we presume that our understanding of the
physics of the Sun at that stage is reasonably good. Evolutionary models of
the ZAMS Sun then predict that it had about 70% of its current luminosity.
That low luminosity is a problem when combined with what we know about the
early atmosphere of the Earth because if the Earth's surface were to become
covered in ice then the albedo would be high enough to prevent the young
planet from recovering. The usual way out of this dead-end is to provide the
early Earth with a reducing atmosphere that leads to a strong greenhouse
effect, keeping the surface fairly toasty, or at least non-frozen.

We know the early Earth had liquid water on its surface, and we know that the
young Mars did as well. Of course both planets may have had greenhouse
atmospheres, but perhaps our understanding of the ZAMS Sun is incomplete.

The purpose of this workshop is to bring together scientists from a number of
disciplines to discuss the state of knowledge of the young Sun and the young
solar system. We will involve leading experts from geochemistry, geophysics,
planetary science, solar physics, and stellar astronomy. Among the questions
to be addressed are:

How much do we know of the early Earth's atmosphere and the planet's surface?
Was there a reducing atmosphere sufficient to produce a greenhouse effect?
How much glaciation occurred at those early epochs?
What other effects related to the Earth itself can account for liquid water?
What limits can we set on the state at different times of the atmosphere and
surface of early Mars?
What limits on the state of the ZAMS Sun can be set from observing stars,
from the solar system, and from the Sun itself?

Registration fee: $100 until March 15, $150 after.

3. 2012 Space Weather Workshop – Student Travel Support

Student travel support is available for the 2012 Space Weather Workshop will
be held April 24 - 27, in Boulder, Colorado. This meeting will bring
together the customer, forecaster, vendor, and research communities to focus
on the impacts of space weather, on forecasting techniques, and on recent
scientific advances in predicting conditions in the space environment. The
program will highlight space weather impacts in several areas, including
ionospheric disturbances, geomagnetic storms and their solar drivers,
radiation belts, and solar energetic particles. Representatives from
industries impacted by space weather will be invited to attend, including
those from commercial airline, electric power, satellite operations, and
navigation/communication industries. Space Weather Workshop 2012 is co-
sponsored by the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, the NSF Division of
Atmospheric Sciences, the NASA Heliophysics Division, and the NASA Space
Radiation Analysis Group. Further details regarding the meeting agenda and

4. Job Opening: Post-Doctoral Position in Space Physics for research in space
plasma physics at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics, Uppsala, Sweden

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral position to study space plasma
physics, in particular in areas of magnetic reconnection, shocks, particle
acceleration and ULF and VLF wave environment of the radiation belts.
Scientific studies would be primarily based on the data from the multi-
spacecraft missions Cluster and THEMIS. The Space Plasma Physics Research
Programme at the Swedish Institute of Space Physics (IRF) has PI
responsibility for the Electric Field and Wave (EFW) instrument on Cluster.
We work with data from all instruments on Cluster as well as with data from
other space missions.

Analysis of data is an essential part of the work and experience in combining
advanced data analysis with theoretical modelling is an advantage, as are
strong computer programming skills. Interest and experience in development of
instrumental techniques and methods will likewise be positively valued, as
will experience in coordination of scientific activities.

Space Physics, located at the Ångström Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, from
the second half of 2012 for one year with a possibility of extension. Closing
date is March 5, 2012. Applications should include a CV, a short letter
stating the applicant's research interests and relevant experience, copies of
undergraduate and PhD degree certificates (or a letter from the supervisor
stating the date when the PhD degree will be obtained), description and proof
of previous post-doctoral positions and/or similar relevant research work (if

Description

Lunar science and exploration are having a renaissance with as many as six missions sent to Moon during the last 5 years itself. This session is aimed at discussing new progress in lunar science from recent missions, latest science results, newer insight into our understanding of Moon, modeling and synthesis of different scientific data, future missions, and science questions. It will include invited, contributed, and poster papers. Papers on new lunar mission concepts, instrumentation for the future lunar missions, and human lunar exploration are also welcome in this session.

This session is organised with support of COSAPR Commissions E, F, and PEX panel.

B0.2 Mars Exploration

Description

Papers are welcome on the following topics for this event: Mars scientific update (All current missions). Ancient Mars - New Mars: How our understanding of Mars history has changed. Recent and past changes in the Martian climate. Water and potential habitats. Future exploration of Mars: Mars Science Lander, Phobos mission, Exomars mission, etc.

B0.3 Active Natural Satellites in the Solar System

Description

At least five satellites in the Solar System are geologically active and show time variable properties. Titan with its thick nitrogen atmosphere is showing seasonal changes that are being closely watched by the Cassini spacecraft. Some of these changes will be well developed by the time of the 2012 COSPAR. Both Enceladus and Io are radiating more heat than can be fully explained. This has stimulated a number of modelling studies, theoretical investigations, and concepts for new instruments and missions. Europa's surface shows signs of relatively recent geological activity. Ganymede, with its own magnetosphere, is believed to have the internal activity that is necessary to generate its magnetic field. The B03 Organizing Committee welcomes papers about these satellites that address the observational evidence, modelling, and theoretical interpretation. Also welcome are papers on studies of the satellite interactions with their environments, supporting laboratory investigation!

B0.4 Small Bodies Exploration: Past, Present and Future Space Missions

Description

In 2011 DAWN will go into orbit around Vesta; we will have the flybys of the Stardust and Deep Impact Extended Mission at Temple 1 and Hartley 2, respectively. In addition, the results from Rosetta's Lutetia flyby will have been evaluated in detail and can be put into perspective with the Vesta results. Asteroids: Vesta, Lutetia. Comets: Temple 1, Hartely 2 flybys, Rosetta update. Space situation awareness: new mission studies to NEOs.

B0.5 Dust and Planetary Rings

Description

The scope of this session covers all aspects of interplanetary, interstellar and circumplanetary dust including planetary rings. You are invited to present your recent results related to past and ongoing space missions (e.g. Cassini, New Horizon, Stardust, LADEE), observational results from the the ground and from space-based observatories (e.g. Spitzer, Herschel), future space instrumentation, as well as dynamical studies, laboratory simulations and modelling. This session also covers dust in the early solar system, circumstellar dust, dust and rings in exoplanetary systems.

B0.7 Mercury: The New View from Orbit

Description

The intensive exploration of the planet Mercury is now underway. NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft executed three flybys of Mercury in 2008-2009, entered into orbit about the innermost planet in March 2011, and by mid-2012 will have completed more than one year of continuous orbital observations of Mercury's interior, surface, exosphere, magnetosphere, and environment. The BepiColombo dual Mercury orbiter mission of ESA and JAXA by mid-2012 will be well along on its constructions, integration, and testing schedule, and mission orbital observation plans will be maturing. Supporting ground-based astronomical and laboratory observations and increasingly sophisticated numerical models of key planetary processes will inform the analysis of new observations of this important end-member of the inner planet family.

After arriving at Venus in April 2006, Venus Express has now collected data on the atmosphere, clouds, surface and solar wind interaction for more than five years. The Japanese Venus Climate Orbiter, Akatsuki, after its first unfortunate attempt for orbit insertion in 2010, is now retargeted to arrive at Venus in 2015. At the same time there are several missions in the planning and/or proposal stage in Russia, the USA and Europe. In addition Chinese and Indian scientists have expressed interest in missions of their respective nations. It is obvious that activities related to Venus research are more intense now than for many years. This session is therefore very timely and will provide a platform for all scientists active or interested in Venus research. We welcome contributions in all fields related to Venus including, among others, space or ground based observations and results, modelling, theory, comparative planetology of the terrestrial planets, and plans and ideas for n!
ew missions.

Description

Solar system exploration has become an international effort. Once the purview of only a few nations with tightly guarded data sets, data are shared freely between researchers across international boundaries. In this session we will review several of the international data systems that been developed to document and provide access to planetary, solar, and heliophysical data sets (PDS, PSA, Europlanet, HELIO, NASA VOs, etc.). We will discuss the International Planetary Data Alliance (IPDA) and its role as a body dedicated to facilitating international data sharing. We will also focus on the metadata, methods, and protocols for cross-system data discovery and retrieval. In addition to the topics listed above, papers on data management, data validation, data processing tools, and metadata translation as related to the general topic of international data sharing systems are solicited.

Working Group 4 (WG4 – Space Environment, Natural and Artificial), as part of ISO / Technical Committee 20 / Subcommitee 14 (Space systems and operations) has been established for developing the ISO standards of space environment. During the recent years several international standards related to physical phenomena in space were developed such as galactic cosmic rays, the Earth's magnetospheric magnetic field, ionosphere and plasmasphere, solar irradiance, etc. These standards address users to scientific models which enable to estimate the space environment conditions. Their predictions are strongly needed during the design and development of space systems and their operations. This session supplies an important opportunity to foster the contacts between engineering community, main users of the standards, and scientific community, developing the models of space environment. The main topics are: space debris, lunar and planet's environment, solar and geomagnetic activit!
y, energetic particles and fields under quiet and disturbed conditions. The topics also include definition of test conditions, procedure of risk analysis and operational guidelines based on the space environment information and research. Contributions on developments of international standards, the user requirements and the on-going research activities that can be transferred to user-oriented engineering tools are welcomed.

Description

In 2012, the development of a number of new radar facilities will have advanced significantly. For instance, PANSY and MAARSY will be in operation, hopefully funding will be secured for an AMISR in Antarctica, and the EISCAT_3D Preparatory Phase Project will have reached half-time. Also the KAIRA broad-band receiver will have first results. This session aims to find synergies between different groups using these and other existing and future radars to study the middle and upper atmosphere and ionosphere. Discussions are envisaged of recent science results and radar applications as well as development of measurement methods and their implementation.

Ionospheric disturbances from terrestrial and extraterrestrial sources leave impressions on the natural and manmade sources signals in Very Low  Frequency (VLF). Study of VLF signals allow us to probe the upper atmosphere and lower ionosphere (60-100km above ground) which are not studied by balloons or satellites. In this sessions we will invite participants who have specialized in  (a) Disturbances due to solar flares (b) Disturbances due to X-rays and Gamma ray events in space (Terrestrial Gamma-ray flashes, Gamma Ray Bursts, Soft Gamma Ray Repeaters etc.) and their interpretations (c) Disturbances due to solar eclipse (current, historical) and other predictable events (d) Extraction of ionospheric parameters or the sources from these observations (e) Methods to study the effects, Wave-Hop theoretic and Mode theoretic results (f) Studies using LWPC code (g) Possible correlations among ionospheric perturbations and seismic events - statistical an!

The Thermosphere-Ionosphere-Geosphere Research (TIGER) program was established in 1998 with the objective of obtaining a better quantitative understanding of the variable solar ultraviolet, extreme-ultraviolet, and X-ray irradiance and its effects on the upper atmosphere. Energetic inputs to the thermosphere-ionosphere system due to solar-wind and magnetospheric effects are also within the purview of this program. Measurements of solar irradiance and their interpretation, development of solar irradiance models and thermosphere-ionosphere models, and comparison to upper atmosphere and ionosphere measurements, are key aspects of the international collaborations pursued through this research. For this symposium, papers on all of these subjects are solicited.

Description

The transfer of energy from the solar wind and magnetosphere to the ionosphere and thermosphere occurs primarily but not exclusively at high and mid latitudes. Following the passage of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and other solar particles, the aurora brightens, ring current intensifies, geomagnetic storms occur, sub-auroral electric fields and disturbance neutral winds intensify, and ionospheric conductance and total electron content change dramatically. Heliospheric, magnetospheric and ionospheric satellites and ground based facilities provide a powerful set of synergistic tools to study the variety of underlying wave and particle processes over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales in the coupled solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere-thermosphere system. We invite contributions of both observation studies using satellite and/or ground-based data and theoretical studies on this system: particularly results from the new C/NOFS, Swarm and e-POP satellites.

This session provides an open forum for discussing the Physics and Chemistry of the high-latitude Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere (MLT) region through new observations, modeling and laboratory studies. Layered phenomena in the MLT region are often used as tracers for important physical and chemical processes occurring between 80 and 110 km that are otherwise difficult to observe. Research on Noctilucent Clouds (NLC) / Polar Mesospheric Clouds (PMC), Polar Mesosphere Summer Echoes (PMSE), meteoric metal layers, dust and ion layers, the airglow layers and mesospheric inversion layers continues to provide new insight into key processes within the MLT. Results from recent rocket projects, satellite missions and ground-based measurements and modeling studies addressing these phenomena in unprecedented detail and focusing on science questions including energy & momentum budget, waves, instabilities and coupling processes, trends, solar cycle variations as well as aerosols and ot!

In particular, studies in the following areas are most welcome.

This event will have a focus on the effects of extra-terrestrial influences on the composition and dynamics of the middle atmosphere and D-region of ionosphere revealed by observation and modelling. The main topics of the event are as follows:
- middle atmosphere response to UV solar variations on short and long-term scales;
- effects of energetic particles on ionization of polar atmosphere;
- effects of energetic particles on chemical composition;
- dynamical response during and after SPEs and geomagnetic storms;
- comparison between comprehensive chemical-dynamical models and satellite observations (including results of HEPPA activities);
- effects of external forcing on the lower ionosphere.
Organizers hope that the event will bring new knowledge about the behavior of the middle atmosphere under different solar activity phases and on the mechanisms of solar-terrestrial relationships.

Papers addressing comparative aspects of upper atmosphere, ionosphere and magnetosphere features and processes are especially encouraged. Both solicited and contributed presentations are welcome in this symposium which encompasses all solar system bodies except the Earth.

Ionospheric models used in operational applications have long relied on the CCIR and URSI models for a representation of the E and F peak characteristics. Since the development of these models in the mid-sixties and mid-eighties, respectively, ionosondes and other sounding experiments have accumulated a wealth of new measurements for these peak parameters. A number of new regional and global models have been developed based on these new data in combination with new modeling techniques. This session will review the current status of these efforts and also discuss the times and regions for which more data are needed. Techniques for assimilating these models to real-time conditions are of special interest. Papers will be also accepted that focus on other aspects of ionospheric modeling related to the International Reference Ionosphere. This could include new models proposed for specific parameters, comparison of IRI predictions with observations, and applications of the IRI mo!

Description

Charged dust particles are present everywhere, be it meteors and noctilucent clouds in the Earth's mesosphere or dust in Saturn's rings or dust devils on Mars. Artificial release of dust particles in mesosphere-ionosphere region has been used to measure electromagnetic properties of the background plasma. In recent years, sounding rockets have been used to create dusty plasmas in the ionosphere that in turn generate plasma waves by interacting with the background ionosphere. These waves are of interest to a large subsection of laboratory as well as space physicists. In addition, dusty plasmas play a significant role in other space environments such as the moon's surface, other small bodies in the solar system and other astronomical environments. We invite papers to be presented and discussed from a diverse field of dusty plasmas in space for this session.

The session will be scheduled on a single half-day with no other commission D sessions in parallel. Please submit an abstract to this session only when invited by the MSO or one of the DOs.

D1.1 The 3-dimensional Heliosheath

Description

The inner heliosheath (IHS) is the outermost region of the heliosphere beyond the termination shock. Here the solar wind (SW) is slowed down and compressed by its interaction with the local interstellar medium (LISM) creating a heliopause. The outer heliosheath (OHS) is created on the outer side of the heliopause by the compressed and decelerated LISM. Considerable achievements in the understanding of the global SW-LISM interaction structure and physical phenomena occurring in the heliosheaths have been made over the latest few years due to the experiments onboard Voyager 1 and 2, SOHO, Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX), Ulysses, HST, and other spacecraft. Theoretical models have matured enough to be able to predict and explain the heliosheath properties. With Voyager 1 and 2 crossing the heliospheric termination shock, understanding physical processes governing the SW-LISM interaction has become one of the most exciting areas of space physics. Today, the Voyager 1 and 2!
spacecraft, after over 30 years of historic discoveries, are exploring the boundaries of the heliosphere and approach the heliopause. Launched in October 2008, the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) has also started exploring the outermost reaches of the solar wind, but from an orbit at 1 Astronomical Unit, providing a global view of the heliosphere via remote sensing of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs). The global features of the heliospheric interface depend on local properties of the plasma, such as pick-up ion (PUI) energy distributions, and the magnetic field.

We invite theoretical and observational talks that analyze physical processes (e. g, charge exchange, ENA generation, PUI transport, turbulence, magnetic field effects, solar wind flow structure, wave emission) in the inner and outer heliosheaths, and their relation with the global heliospheric structure. Talks relating the properties the inner and outer regions of the time-evolving heliosphere and addressing three-dimensional properties of the SW and LISM plasma and magnetic fields are especially welcome.

D1.2 Galactic Cosmic Rays and their Anti-particles

Description

The PAMELA mission has observed cosmic rays and their antiparticles with extra-ordinary precision at Earth since 2006. These observations, together with previous observations from balloon and space missions, have been contributing to new insights of primary and secondary spectra of galactic cosmic rays entering the heliosphere. In addition, new insights and a better understanding of the modulation processes in the heliosphere, in particular gradient and curvature drifts responsible for charge-sign dependent effects are obtained. The PAMELA observations over the recent prolonged solar minimum period, together with observations from other space missions (e.g. Ulysses, Voyagers etc.) and the upcoming AMS mission, provide and excellent opportunity to study heliospheric effects, both experimentally and theoretically.

The general focus of this two-day symposium is on observations made in the heliosphere of cosmic rays and their antiparticles, from a few MeV up to 100 GeV. Contributions on the interpretation of observations, from the origin of these antiparticles, their propagation in the Galaxy, through the interstellar medium and especially inside the heliosphere up to Earth, are encouraged. Contributions on the relevant theories and corresponding numerical models are also most welcome.

D1.3 Acceleration of Anomalous Cosmic Rays

After passage of the Voyager spacecraft through the termination shock. the acceleration regime of anomalous cosmic rays had become observable. Thus, the models for the acceleration and modulation of energetic particles can now be validated by data. Recently new ideas to describe the acceleration process have been developed, as well as for the injection process of pickup ions into the acceleration regime.

In the session the following topic will be emphasized:

1. Acceleration processes at the termination shock and in the heliosheath  
2. Characteristic of energetic particles at the termination shock and in the inner heliosheath  
3. Propagation of anomalous galactic cosmic rays inside and outside of the heliosphere

D2.1 CMEs in the Rising Phase of Solar Cycle 24

As Solar Cycle 24 activity increases toward a solar maximum that is expected around 2013, the coming years provide good opportunities to observe coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and related space weather events. Current solar missions, such as Hinode, STEREO, and SDO, and modeling analysis using these data enhance our ability to measure detailed aspects of these events at the Sun, including their initiation, outflow, and three-dimensional structure. Thus, we invite presentations on theoretical interpretations of the initiation, the outward propagation, and the impact on Earth of Solar Cycle 24 CMEs from observations that include the use of observations made by these recent space missions.

Description

Magnetic Reconnection is a key plasma-physical process in astrophysics, it can be observed at the Sun in magnetospheres and in the laboratory. Current astronomical space observatories, solar (HINODE, STEREO, SDO) andmagnetospheric (CLUSTER) space missions provide a wealth of new information about reconnection in space. This empirical information has to be compared with theoretical predictions and with numerical simulations in order to obtain better insights into the physics of reconnection. It has also to be compared withlaboratory investigations. This session brings together scientists working in different astrophysical, space and laboratory programs to combine their newl obtained knowledge about reconnection. The main topics and solicited papers of the session will cover actual spacecraft observations andcurrent laboratory results, the theory of reconnection in astrophysics, solar, magnetospheric and laboratory applications and numerical simulation results. Hence, we encou!
rage the participation of scientists from astrophysics, Solar, magnetospheric and laboratory plasma physics. Conclusions for the configuration of possible future space missions like Solar Orbiter, Solar Probe Plus, Solar C and MMS and the Japanese Multiscale mission SCOPE. Publications will appear in J. Adv. Space Research.

The heliospheric magnetic field originates from dynamo action underneath the solar surface. This session will explore the question how the magnetic field produced in the solar interior ultimately comes to fill up the entire heliosphere through a complex chain of physical processes. The specific topics to be covered will be solar dynamo models, emergence of magnetic flux through surface, ground and space-based observations of magnetic activity at the surface, initiation of flares and CMEs by magnetic eruption, magnetic field in the solar wind.

D2.4 Solar-Wind Fine Structure: Its Physical Properties, its Origin, and its

An examination of magnetic field, plasma, and composition measurements of the solar wind uncovers an abundance of fine structure with timescales of minutes to hours. According to their characteristics the structures have various names: current sheets, plasma boundaries, flow structures, pressure-balance structures, noncompressive density structures, flux tubes, magnetic holes, steepened Alfven waves…. In this Commission D Session, (1) information will be sought into what the various structures are, (2) ideas will be discussed about their origin at the Sun or away from the Sun, and (3) analysis will be sought about the effect of the various structures on the Earth's magnetosphere. For space-weather purposes, the question is raised: are there predictable patterns in the fine structure or is it completely random?

The Ulysses mission was terminated on 30 June 2009 after more than 18 years of very successful operation. The success of this truly unique and historical mission has been outstanding. After this mission was terminated, the unique observing capabilities from high latitude have not been replaced. While several missions are observing the Sun from the ecliptic plane, the loss of solar polar observations deprives the scientific community from monitoring the sun at high latitudes. New concepts and opportunities may arise in the not too distant future possibly with new and more modern instruments than Ulysses to fill this potential gap in observations. We solicit papers for mission concepts from the space agencies that are and willing to be part of the International Living with a Star (ILWS) initiative and from scientific community to address science from this unique vantage point making remote sensing and in-situ measurement of the Sun as well as the interplanetary medium, includi!
ng ambient solar wind and the ICMEs. We also invite papers with theoretical analysis of physical parameters that may be observed from the solar polar orbit to gain a better understanding of the Sun as well as the interplanetary medium.

The magnetosphere is a complex nonlinear dynamical system. Large regions of the magnetosphere are connected by fundamental processes operating on vastly different scales. It is necessary to understand how small-scale processes control large-scale phenomena, and how thin boundary layers are formed and sustained in spite of the presence of plasma turbulence in various flow boundaries of the magnetosphere. There is a need to clarify the role of coherent solitary electrostatic structures, chaos, stochastic processes and self organized criticality at the bow shock and magnetopause as well as in plasma sheet dynamics, substorm onset and the magnetosphere-ionosphere via field-aligned currents. Several ISTP spacecraft have provided valuable data on waves and particle on various crucial region of the magnetosphere. The Cluster, Double Star and Themis missions have provided an unprecedented coverage of the magnetosphere on a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. This session will!
provide the opportunity to report on the latest results from theory, simulation and data analysis dealing with the nonlinear processes, e.g., magnetic reconnection, parallel electric fields, heating and acceleration of plasma, solitary structures, etc., occurring in the various plasma boundaries in the magnetosphere. In particular, contribution from the application of theory, simulation and data analyses which employ multipoint measurements from Cluster, Double Star, Themis and other spacecraft and ground based observatories measurements are encouraged.

Description

A magnetospheric substorm is comprised of numerous phenomena spreading from the Earth's surface to the distant magnetotail and beyond. A fleet of magnetospheric missions operating in magnetotail during last decade together with geosynchronous and ground-based monitoring provide a potent tool for studying magnetotail dynamics including substorm onset and evolution. Critical questions still remain about the coupling of small-scale and large-scale phenomena, including inter-relationship between current sheet instabilities, current disruption and magnetic reconnection, plasma injections, dipolarization and wave phenomena. The chronology and net contributions of these phenomena to magnetospheric substorm is also unclear. Although the near-Earth magnetotail is often considered as the primary region for substorm activity, one should not ignore the dynamical processes in the distant tail and their coupling with near Earth space. Similarly, the detailed magnetospheric response to inc!
ident upstream forcing are important for understanding the full pattern of dynamics leading to magnetospheric substorms. This session will provide the opportunity to report on the latest results from data analysis of Cluster, Geotail, Double Star, THEMIS, new ARTEMIS missions and other spacecraft, theory and simulation dealing with the different aspects of magnetotail and auroral dynamics and their consequences related to substorm rise and evolution. Contributions which employ multipoint spacecraft measurements and ground based observations are highly encouraged.

From the earliest geophysical investigations, studies of solar-terrestrial relations have led to advances in other branches of science. For example, the necessity of processing data from ground-based magnetometer networks motivated Gauss to develop advanced methods in calculus. Analytical approaches, developed to investigate collective processes in collisionless plasmas , have been exploited to study new concepts such as quark-gluon plasmas. Plasma turbulence, which is often saturated by nonlinear processes, has been used as a test bed for the development and validation of nonlinear processes and has contributed to improvements in the methodologies used for the identification of other nonlinear systems. A golden age of space plasma studies has been marked by a number of groundbreaking multi-spacecraft missions starting with ISEE and more recently in the Cluster and THEMIS missions and the prospect of the Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) mission to be launched in 2014. This e!
vent will review the lessons learned by other branches of science as a result of space plasma studies of the near Earth environment. The event will also focus on the future of space plasma studies in all regions of the terrestrial magnetosphere, trying to answer the question 'Should we expect new future discoveries on a scale similar to those already obtained by missions including ISEE and Cluster, or only incremental progress?'.

The dynamical response of the inner magnetosphere to solar wind forcing is increasingly recognised to depend significantly on the coupling between a wide range of overlapping plasma populations. The dynamics of the energetic particle populations in the ring current, plasmasphere and radiation belts , spanning over six orders of magnitude in energy, are known to be strongly coupled through the intermediary of a wide range of plasma waves. The properties of the plasma waves (e.g., hiss, chorus, EMIC, long-period ULF waves etc) are determined not only by the characteristics of the driving energetic particle population, but also by the properties of the background plasma. Moreover, the efficiency of the waves in effecting transport, scattering and ultimately acceleration and loss of energetic particles is also controlled by plasma properties. We solicit papers studying the dynamics of the ring current, plasmasphere and radiation belts in response to solar wind forcing. Observati!
onal and theoretical and modelling studies are invited, those examining the important cross energy coupling, and the plasma waves-particle interactions mitigating this coupling, are especially welcome. One hundred years after Hess' discovery of the radiation coming from space, the main questions about the origin of cosmic rays (CRs) are about to be answered. CRs, as observed in satellite, balloon and ground-based detectors, cover an enormous energy range, from below 100 MeV/nucleon to beyond 10^20 eV/particle, and they encompass electrons/positrons, antiprotons, and nuclei from Hydrogen to Actinides as well as gamma rays. There have been many advances in recent years in both measurements of CRs and in the models describing their acceleration and propagation through the Galaxy. Yet, the exact origin of these ubiquitous particles remains elusive. Recent advances in understanding the CRs up to the TeV region, through new data and theoretical models, will be highlighted during this event, along with prospects for future measurements. Gamma-ray observations from space and by ground Cherenkov telescopes will provide complementary information about the sources and distribution !
of CRs in the Milky Way. The session encourages presentation of new experimental approaches and theoretical analysis directed towards answering the question of the "Origin" for the cosmic messengers.

E1.16 Astrophysical Ejections Driven by Magnetic Reconnections

Description

Considering the fact that most of the universe is in the form of plasma threaded by a magnetic field, we realize that the process of energy transportation and conversion happening in the solar atmosphere may also occur in other places of similar environment, for instance, in the black hole/accretion disk system and in the magnetic configuration around a magnetar. In an accretion disk, plasma motions due to the differential rotation and instabilities result in deformation of the magnetic field as taking place in the solar atmosphere, and the energy accumulation in the corona. The catastrophe occurring in the coronal magnetic field is very likely to account for the episodic jets that are usually observed in the black hole/accretion disk system. In the case of a magnetar, the motion of the material inside the magnetar or that of the surface segments carry the footpoints of the magnetic field around the magentar from one place to another one, deforming the magnetic configuration!
above the central star and building the stress and the energy in the configuration. Similar to what happens in the solar case, the process of the energy accumulation ceases at a critical point where the equilibrium in the system becomes unstable, the system commences to lose the equilibrium, and the consequent process turns to dynamic and explosive, releasing the accumulated energy in a violent fashion. As a result the catastrophe and magnetic reconnection, ejection of a large of amount of mass together with the tangled plasma and the associated major flare could be expected.

The proposed session is to compare the explosive processes involved in the release of the magnetic energy in various environments. Such a comparison consists of two aspects. First, we pursue an approach to applying the existing solar eruption models to the eruptive phenomena occurring in other places in the universe. Second, this may bring the known results for eruptions obtained from the investigations of various communities together and help people of different research areas to better understand the work and the progress made by others.

E2.1 Unveiling the Role of Small Scales in Solar Dynamic Phenomena

Description

Unprecedent temporal and spatial resolution observations of the Sun's atmosphere acquired on ground and by the most recent space missions have demonstrated the importance of small scales in solar dynamic phenomena. Small-scale magnetic features are present everywhere in the solar photosphere and their progressive coalescence into larger magnetic concentrations could eventually results in the formation of active regions. Reconnections among magnetic elements may be a candidate to explain chromospheric spicules, whose dynamics is now studied in much more details at sub-arcsecond resolution. Small-scale flux emergence may trigger reconnection events above the photosphere, leading to chromospheric surges, prominences eruptions and coronal mass ejections. EUV and X-ray telescopes have uncovered new small-scale eruptive events as those tentatively referred to as "mini-CMEs", associated on disk with "mini-waves", which have a strong similarity to the large-scale "EIT" waves. More i!
n general, observations show that small-scale eruptive events occur continuously all over the Sun (such as chromospheric anemone jets, polar jets). High cadence data allowed also to study waves and quasi-periodic disturbances propagating off-limb through the corona, which might provide the additional momentum and heat required for the fast solar wind acceleration.The link between small and large scale solar dynamic phenomena, from the photosphere to the corona and heliosphere, is a key aspect for the identification of those physical mechanisms acting for the transport and deposition of energy in the corona and solar wind, as well as in the formation of the heliosphere. This Session will aim at collect observational and theoretical evidences for a possible unified picture of dynamic small and large scales phenomena: the role of small scales to the production of large scale events will be emphasized.

This session provides a forum for discussions on observational and theoretical  aspects related to flows and waves in the solar atmosphere, with  emphasis on magnetic fine structures from the photosphere to the corona. With the higher spatial and temporal resolution of the STEREO, Hinode, SDO  instruments, the number of puzzling features has actually increased. This concerns mainly observations and modelling of waves and flows  in active regions and prominences. In a few cases, opposite views have been expressed. With the high-resolution  data from SDO, we now have the chance to clarify some of the outstanding issues by combining high-cadence imgaging with high-resolution spectroscopy  (e.g. Hinode/EIS and ground-based). We welcome theoretical and observational contributions. We intend to group speakers presenting differing views on selected topics and allow some time for discussions.

The Event "New Views of the Sun with SDO" at the Bremen 2010 General Assembly, less than 5 months after the SDO launch was focused on the NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) newly obtained results. The success of the Event evidenced a strong interest in the mission and its results, whether already obtained or to be confirmed. The 2012 Event entitled "SDO: New Science Highlights" aims at presenting, in a comprehensive way and on a firm ground, the SDO discoveries which are of general interest for the solar/stellar/space communities. For this half-day Event, a set of 6 to 8 topics will be selected on the basis of invited talks only. A poster session is also scheduled. The list of invited talks envisaged includes: "SDO, along with other recent solar missions, highlights on : 1. Magnetic flux emergence from the convective zone into the solar atmosphere 2. Energy storage and release in the solar atmosphere 3. Dynamic temperature structure of the solar corona 4. Sources of sol!

Hinode/SOT and HMI/SDO Observations

The high-quality measurements from space-based Hinode SOT and SDO/HMI missions is shedding new light on the nature of solar magnetic field. These observed vector magnetic fields are useful to study quantitatively the non-potentiality of the solar magnetic fields in active regions (ARs). The solar eruptive events like flares, filament eruptions, CMEs all derive their energy from the non-potential component of the magnetic field. Numerous parameters characterizing non-potentiality of the magnetic field in ARs have been proposed by researchers. Such parameters, which essentially try to quantify the shear and twist component of the non-potential field, have been used for flare forecasting with varying degree of successes. How has hihg-quality observations of magnetic field from space-based missions impacted our ability to forecast solar flares and our understanding of the underlying processes involved in solar eruptive events is the main topic of discussion in this scientif!
ic event. Observational case studies, development of new parameters of non-potentiality and theoretical and numerical studies concerning magnetic field evolution during eruptive phenomena can be presented.

Description

Coronal heating revisited. Waves, turbulence, reconnection, spicules: how are they all connected?
Recent observations reveal the presence of jets and spicules that may be carrying hot plasma into the corona at considerable speeds. It has been argued that this phenomena could represent a major contribution to solving the coronal heating problems.Yet, estimates of their occurrence rate, filling factor, energy, and mass are still preliminary. Moreover, jets and spicules are often associated with the ingredients of classical coronal heating paradigms: magnetic reconnection, waves and turbulence.
Authors are invited to present observational and theoretical/numerical work aiming to classify the possible coronal heating processes in terms of their main features: duration, energy release, rate and place of occurrence. The spatial and temporal resolution of current and future space-borne instrumentation as well as an extensive solar monitoring provide opportunity to enrich datasets with the accompanying statistical analysis of these candidate heating theories. However, is there a dominant mechanism which can be discriminated in the quiet Sun, active regions, and coronal holes? Can these dynamical and/or impulsive features work together and which are their connections?

E2.6 Energetic Processes in Solar Eruptive Events

Description

The most powerful events of energy conversion related to solar activity are eruptive: energy stored in the corona is converted into thermal energy of heated plasma and kinetic energy of largely suprathermal, sometimes relativistic electrons, protons and ions, while the overall magnetic structure is significantly changed and expelled, together with the confined matter, into interplanetary space as a coronal mass ejection (CME). Eruptive events display a broad range of plasma interactions that are relevant to astrophysics in general, but they are also basic elements of space weather. The rising solar activity cycle has seen new observational tools, notably the first stereoscopic observations including imaging of flares and CMEs, together with in situ measurements of interplanetary disturbances and energetic particles. Event E2.6 is to be a forum for presenting these new data and the broad range of complementary observations of plasma and energetic particle signatures in the c!
orona, and to confront them with MHD and kinetic modelling and theory, in order to further our understanding of the solar-heliospheric connection and to help prepare future inner heliospheric missions like Solar Orbiter and Solar Probe+.

PCB.1 Capacity Building in Solar and Sun-Earth Connection Studies

International cooperative programs have proven to be excellent capacity building tools in solar and solar-terrestrial physics research. Starting with the SMY (Solar Maximum Year) in the 80s, followed by ISTP and most recently IHY and ILSW, they all have contributed to disseminate the use of spacecraft data in conjunction with that obtained by ground based instruments. In the absence of such large scale programs, many examples also exist of bilateral or multilateral agreements involving developed and developing countries, that have served the same purpose. In this session we shall deal with past, present and possible future programs and cooperation opportunities, with emphasis on reviewing strengths and weaknesses with regard to scientific outcome and the building of new capacities. Besides invited talks to be requested, we encourage the submission of contributed papers.

Emphasis will be put on education in science research environments or closely connected to scientific institutions. Descriptions of specific experiences in developing countries are also welcomed.
The session is also organized in conjunction with the teacher training session (PE2), and conclusion from the discussion and interaction in PE2 will be presented, as a way to start an efficient network of teachers and scientists.

Training educators for the new era of science education has become a key topic in recent discussions and outlined strategies for the developed and developing world. Among them, the use of Space, and the vast area of scientific and technological development it provides cannot be ignored by teachers and students.

The new generation of students is now facing the turning point between classical teaching methods and the modern Inquiry Based approach. The role of educators is more and more becoming the role of a tutor and students pathway are gaining many degrees of freedom.

Our proposal for this workshop is to provide participants with a general overview of modern tools for science education, their friendly use and the power they carry to perform real research in space sciences and astronomy in school.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to use images data base (images from the main space agencies, available for free on the web), how to process images and ultimatelly how to include such resources in regular school curricula. Will be introduced to powerful tools for data analysis, citizen science programs, etc

PEX.1 Safeguarding Space Environments while Exploring and Using Space:
Striking the Proper Balance

Description

Planetary protection requirements for missions to solar system objects (i.e. Moon, Mars or NEOs) including those missions that will involve humans, although they are extremely exciting and challenging, can restrict access to scientifically interesting sites as it may become necessary to establish special zones on these bodies. Also, activities such as lunar soil mining or tourism can in the longer term durably disrupt the environment. Conversely, restricting the access for scientific purposes alone could result in hampering the potential support that private entrepreneurs could bring to space exploration. The question asked is then "how can we settle on other bodies with minimum local disturbance, while preserving the impetus of space exploration"? Accepted regulations for preventing harmful planetary contaminations currently only consider biological and organic chemical contaminations, but it can be argued that environmental management protocols (e.g. including geologic!
al, aesthetic, historical, ecological or educational considerations) should be included, as is the case with the Antarctic Treaty.

For instance, article VI of the Outer Space Treaty provides an obligation for States to authorise and supervise space activities. Article IX of the same Treaty indicates that "States Parties to the Treaty shall avoid harmful contamination of the celestial bodies". The liability Convention makes launching states liable for damage. Liability of the launching states could thus be extended to damage done to the space environment, including celestial bodies.
Comprehensive and phased policies should thus be developed for such robotic and human missions and encompass and balance a diverse set of stakeholder interests. The role of COSPAR to help elaborate guidelines and draft regulations in interaction with relevant stakeholders is a key issue to further discuss. The session will aim at covering these aspects and, more generally, all topics linked to the protection of lunar, Martian or other bodies environments for scientific research. It is of potential interest to planetary scientists, geologists, astronomers, ethicists, agency executives, lawyers, policy makers.

The role of COSPAR to help elaborate guidelines and draft regulations in interaction with relevant stakeholders is obvious and will be further discussed.
The topics to be covered through this planning phase encompass:
1. Hazard types (dust, vibration, electromagnetic radiation, degradation, etc)
2. Science investigations to be potentially affected (geosciences, telescopes, fundamental physics, astrobiology, etc) and adequate mitigation techniques
3. Environmental ethics and geo-ethics
4. Historical heritage
5. Strategic, programmatic (phasing) and legal issues

These new players, together with large agencies, are developing innovative ideas through contributions to overall Global Space Exploration that make the most efficient use of limited resources utilizing small satellites (including cubesats, nanosats, etc.), sub-orbital missions and analogue activities. These are complemented by educational initiatives with a focus of training the next generation of scientists who will be leading exploration programs in the future. This session is requesting both solicited and unsolicited presentations on the broad topic of entry-level and educational activities related to exploration in the space sciences. The session will focus o!
n contributions from all relevant scientific disciplines (planetary geology, atmospheric sciences, life sciences, microgravity sciences, space physics, etc.) utilizing relatively low cost approaches that are of interest to a wide audience. Models of radiation belts that are based  upon the accumulated observational data are the focus of this session. Predictive radiation models using data assimilation, data defined boundary conditions and/or  interplanetary drivers, and statistical methods are of particular interest.

This session will focus on the predictive physics-based models of the electron/ion radiation belts. For prediction of the radiation belt dynamics, the physics-based models of not only radiation belt particles but also ring current, plasmasphere, wave generation/propagation in the inner magnetosphere are necessary. Presentation of these models for both global and micro-physical processes as well as the comprehensive models for the cross-region, cross-scale, and cross-energy coupling in the inner magnetosphere are welcome. Results of parametrization studies of plasma waves (spectra, spatial distribution, etc) which are important for the modeling are also welcome. Presentations of specific observations, theoretical results, and planned missions for the inner magnetosphere are encouraged in this session as well.

PSB.1 Scientific Ballooning: Recent Development in Technology and
Instrumentation

Description

Scientific ballooning is continuing to evolve. Scientific balloons and missions are vastly different from prior decades. New balloon designs, systems and complex payloads have expanded the capabilities afforded the scientific ballooning community. Missions have increased in detector capabilities, mission profiles and duration. Despite a decrease in the number of over all flights annually, the increased complexity, cost and duration is yielding increased scientific return due to more sensitive detectors and increased duration. This is having significant additional benefits in the training of the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians. The following planned sessions for the event will address the present and future scientific ballooning capabilities and goals: 1. International programs, 2. Mission concepts (Earth and Planets), 3. Science instruments, 4. Balloon systems design analysis and performance, 5. Systems support and 6. Public outreach and education fo!
r next generation of scientist.

PSW.1 Space Weather: Fundamental Physics to Operational Forecasting

Description

Forecasting the state of the near-Earth space environment is a high priority for national organizations and private enterprises which rely on space assets. Theoretical studies and space-based observations, over the past several years, have led us towards a better understanding of the origin and dynamics of solar storms that can generate severe space weather. In conjunction, magnetohydrodynamic models of the Sun-Earth system have progressed towards assimilating observational data for forecasting purposes. Clearly, we are entering an era where space weather forecasting is poised for rapid growth. This special session will review the current state of understanding of the origin and dynamics of solar magnetic storms and in particular, will focus on how knowledge gained from fundamental physics can be translated to models and tools for space weather forecasting.

A mix of solicited (invited) talks, contributed talks and a poster session is planned, followed by a panel discussion. It is envisaged that session participants would include solar, space and upper atmospheric scientists and representatives of national and private organizations interested in space weather forecasts.

PSW.2 Cross-disciplinary Challenges in Space Situational Awareness

Description

Several comprehensive Space Situational Awareness (SSA) programmes are being established around the world with the objective to understand and maintain awareness of the population of space objects, the space environment and related threats and risks. The space objects under consideration are mainly the Earth orbital population (including debris), and the space environment covers space weather, meteoroids and Near Earth Objects. The session will provide the opportunity for discussion of challenging topics of common interest across the various scientific communities involved. The topics expected to be addressed include: - data fusion from ground based and space based SSA observatory - network management of ground based and space based observation systems - space environments effects on SSA observation system - space weather effects on orbital drag

PSW.3 Space Weather Data: Observations and Exploitation for Research and
Applications

Description

Many space weather services currently rely on data from scientific missions. Data provided by these missions is of extremely high quality, however, missions are developed with a set of primary scientific goals and no replacement strategy at end of life. Timeliness of data delivery may also not be a priority.

Conversely, valuable scientific work may be based on data from monitoring instrumentation which is often designed to provide coarser measurements, with an emphasis on timeliness of data delivery and continuity should a particular instrument fail. This continuity leads to the generation of longer term datasets, which provide information on timescales not otherwise available.

In a third scenario, scientific measurements may be affected by space weather, necessitating a correction to the primary data which itself may provide valuable information on current conditions.

This session will review current space weather data availability and discuss issues involved in developing services based on scientific data and using long term datasets designed primarily for monitoring in scientific studies. Key measurement parameters will also be highlighted.

ONLINE REGISTRATION is now available for the Thirteenth Annual International
Solar Wind Conference (www.sw13.org). The Solar Wind meetings are an
established tradition in the field of solar wind physics. The Solar Wind
meetings have proven to be a unique and valuable element of the solar and
space physics research community, being the only meeting that is organized
exclusively to address major problems and progress in the field of coronal
and interplanetary physics over the past 3 to 4 years.

The meeting itself will take place at Sheraton Keauhou Hotel on the Big
Island, Hawaii, USA, from 17 to 22 June 2012.

The conference will conform to the traditional solar wind themes, addressing
the current state of knowledge in the relevant fields of solar and
heliospheric physics. In particular, the conference will address:

1) Physics of the corona, origin and acceleration of the solar wind, and
relevant observations of the Sun.

2) Dynamical behavior of the interplanetary medium throughout the heliosphere,
including large and small scale structures, the evolution of disturbances,
dissipative processes, turbulence, and solar energetic particles.

3) Interaction of the solar wind with the interstellar medium and the
heliospheric boundaries, and cosmic rays.

4) Interaction of the solar wind with solar system objects and dusty
environments, including the Earth's magnetosphere, planets, and comets.

5) Status and prospects of current and future solar wind and heliospheric
missions, including new advances in instrumentation.

The program will follow a largely traditional format in that it will be
composed of invited lectures and contributed talks and posters.

Applications are invited for a two-year Research Associate position in the
Space and Atmospheric Physics Group, Imperial College London. The research
would involve data analysis, interpretation and modelling in space and/or
planetary physics to complement and advance areas of interest within the
Group. Some of these topics would take advantage of magnetic field
measurements taken by Imperial magnetometers currently operating on several
spacecraft and in situ particle data for which the group undertakes
significant roles. Supporting theoretical and modelling work is also required.
Main areas of interest within the Group include the Earth’s outer
magnetosphere and bow shock, magnetic reconnection, turbulence and related
phenomena in interplanetary space, planetary magnetospheres, atmospheres and
exospheres, solar-wind cometary interactions, and magnetic field measurements
at or near other planets. The work will exploit the Group’s involvement in
current space missions, including Cassini, Cluster, Rosetta, Stereo, Themis,
and Venus Express together with future missions (e.g., NASA's MMS or the
CINEMA/TRIO CubeSat mission).

guidance. The Chief also carries out peer-reviewed scientific research
in Heliophysics, and leads in the development of new missions,
instruments, and theoretical investigations to achieve NASA goals.

Organized jointly by GEM and the Ultra Large Terrestrial International
Magnetometer Array (ULTIMA), the GEM-ULTIMA Forum is held annually
during the mini-GEM Workshops in December. At the Forum participants
discuss all topics about ground-based magnetometers, such as the
operation of magnetometer stations, data distribution, and research
using ground-based magnetometer data. The Forum is open to all
interested in ground-based magnetometers and their observations.

DAP-2012

The Dust, Atmosphere and Plasma environment of the Moon and Small Bodies
(DAP-2012) workshop will take place June 6-8, 2012, in Boulder, Colorado. It
will be a forum to discuss our current understanding of the surface
environment of the Moon and asteroids, to share new results from past and
ongoing missions, and to describe expectations for planned upcoming missions.
The workshop will be focused on the open science questions, the status and
future of our modeling and laboratory experimental capabilities, the
definition of the required measurements and instrument capabilities for
future investigations from orbit, or to be deployed on the surface.

DAP-2012 is a follow up on the first workshop Lunar dust, atmosphere, and
plasma: The next steps (LDAP-2010). Contributions to LDAP-2010 were published
in the special issue of Planetary and Space Sciences, and a similar volume is
planned to report the contributions to DAP-2012.

The workshop is hosted by A. Stern and M. Horányi, and supported by the NASA
Lunar Science Institute: Colorado Center for Lunar Dust and Atmospheric
Studies, the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, and the Center for
Integrated Plasma Studies of the University of Colorado.

The International AGU Chapman Conference on "Longitude and Hemispheric
Dependence of Space Weather" will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, November
12-16, 2012. The conference will focus on two overarching themes: A) How does
the ionospheric response to major solar events depend on hemisphere and
longitude; and B) Expand the study of space weather to include day-to-day
ionospheric variability, i.e., to those times when solar and geomagnetic
activities are moderate, and forcing from the lower atmosphere drives a lot
of the variability. The latter will include examining the cause of longitude
and hemispheric dependence in total electron content (TEC) and occurrence of
plasma density irregularities. The conference will include six main science
topics (1) Hemispherical Dependence of Magnetospheric Energy Injection, (2)
Longitude and Hemispheric Dependence of Storm-Enhanced Densities (SED), (3)
Response to New Time-History of Solar Flares, (4) Quiet-Time Longitude
Spatial Structure, (5) Temporal Response to the Lower-Atmosphere
Disturbances, and (6) Climatology of TEC and Scintillation in Different

Session Description: The LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) is a next-generation
radio telescope which utilises thousands of stationary dipoles and tiles to
observe celestial phenomena. This session is intended for the joint
communities of NAM/GAG/UKSP/MIST to learn about the developments of LOFAR
including updates on the status of the system and its current scientific
capabilities, the early science results from all aspects of its applications
and operation, as well as the upcoming opportunities for general "open skies"
observing. The LOFAR dipoles and tiles are grouped into various 'stations'
which are centred on the Netherlands with additional stations across
Europe. In The Netherlands, a total of 40 LOFAR stations are nearing
completion with an initial eight international stations already deployed in
Germany, France, Sweden, and the UK (and at least four more expected between
Poland and Germany by the end of 2013). With its dense core array and
interferometric baselines of up to 1,000 km, LOFAR has the potential to
achieve both unparalleled sensitivity (sub-mJy) and spatial resolution (sub-
arcsecond) in this largely-unexplored low-frequency radio regime (~10 MHz to
250 MHz). It is also a key pathfinder for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA)
and its technology and design remit are presently being used as an initial
test bed for the future EISCAT_3D system to be based across northern
Scandinavia. LOFAR will be able to survey wide areas of the sky all at once
and will open up a new window for astronomers, astrophysicists, cosmologists,
and solar/space scientists alike. Areas of science which can be explored
with LOFAR include, but are not limited to, the Epoch of Re-ionisation (EoR),
Pulsars, Transients, Cosmic Rays, Magnetism, deep Extra-Galactic Surveys, and
also studies of the Sun, the Solar Atmosphere/Solar Wind, Space Weather, and
the Earth's Ionosphere/Atmosphere. In summary, the session is designed for
showcasing LOFAR's scientific potential and progress to date. The session
should include a LOFAR overview and specifics of LOFAR commissioning, current
status, scientific and technical capabilities, and upcoming
opportunities. We solicit contributions from any/all of the science areas
that will be covered by the observational capabilities of LOFAR which would
include contributed abstracts on the early space, solar, solar wind,
ionosphere, and solar system studies, the early results from the galactic and
extra-galactic science which will also include pulsars, magnetism, cosmology
and the Epoch of Re-ionisation (EoR) work to date.

5. CUA Space Sciences & Space Weather Graduate Program

Since the introduction of the telegraph, the first large-scale electrical
system in the nineteenth century, eruptive solar events have had an adverse
impact on society. Today these phenomena are called "space weather" that
entails the energetic interactions between the Sun, the near-earth
environment, and the earth itself. We have recently seen great scientific
advances in understanding space weather. Quickly maturing space science
models, along with new observational space-borne and ground-based facilities
have transformed a wonder of the past into a modern quantitative field of
physics with true predictive power.

Starting January 2012 The Catholic University of America (CUA) Department of
Physics will provide Masters and PhD graduate training through its new Space
Sciences & Space Weather Graduate Program. Graduates will obtain Masters and
PhD degrees in Physics under the new program. The new training is designed to
address the growing US national and international need for highly skilled
space weather scientists, who understand how to apply scientific knowledge to
mitigate the impacts of the hazardous space environment on humans and manmade
technology in space and on the surface of the Earth. The Space Sciences &
Space Weather Graduate Program is designed to provide the needed 21st century
training for scientists capable of making connection from basic space science
research to applications and operational space weather services.

Students participating in the new program will: 1) develop quantitative
understanding of space physical phenomena, 2) learn to carry out
independent scientific research, 3) understand how space weather impacts
society, 4) understand how basic research can feed into applications and
applications into operational space weather products and 5) understand the
importance of interdisciplinary nature of space weather and space sciences in
general.

The program is a collaborative activity between NASA Goddard Space Flight
Center (GSFC) and CUA. Some of the instruction and intern opportunities
will take place at NASA GSFC. Important components of the training will
include joint space science research projects with GSFC's Heliophysics
Science Division as well as operational space weather forecasting experience
at GSFC Space Weather Center. CUA will provide competitive stipends to
highly qualified applicants.

Division, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, for a supervisory
astrophysicist to serve as Chief of the Space Weather Laboratory. The
mission of the Space Weather Laboratory is to perform fundamental
research and modeling of the coupled Sun-Earth system, with particular
emphasis on the space weather effects important to NASA and the nation.
The Chief develops and maintains the Laboratory's strategic vision,
provides supervisory and administrative oversight of civil service
personnel, resources, and tasks, and provides scientific and technical
guidance. The Chief also carries out peer-reviewed scientific research
in Heliophysics, and leads in the development of new missions,
instruments, and theoretical investigations to achieve NASA goals.
Evidence of management experience and leadership in the scientific
community is highly desirable.

The EISCAT Scientific Association will appoint a new Director from January
2013.

The successful candidate will have a strong scientific background with broad
experience in geospace and atmospheric physics or related fields, as well as
good technical insight and excellent organizational skills. He/she needs to
demonstrate the leadership qualities required to promote and lead the EISCAT
Scientific Association during a period of change, as the organisation moves
toward a new generation of facilities. A critical part of the new Director’s
role will be to make the high?level contacts needed to attract new funding
and bring more international partners into EISCAT. Experience of working with
similar international research infrastructures and managing large
international projects would therefore be a great advantage.

The full?time post is for a three?year period with the possibility of renewal
for a further three years. The Director is based at the EISCAT Headquarters
in Kiruna, Sweden. However a considerable amount of international travel
should be expected.

Applications should include a resume and a one page statement of the
applicant’s vision for EISCAT and should be sent by email to:

The Geophysical Institute will have a memorial service for Dave Sentman in
the
afternoon of Friday 27 January, 2012. The format of the service is still in
the planning
stage, but there will be testimonials by colleagues and reading of messages
received from colleagues outside. The service will be videotaped with a copy
going to the family. Also, written testimonials will be collected
and given to the family.

2. First Announcement: International AGU Chapman Conference on: "Hemispheric
and Longitude Dependence of Space Weather" 12-16 November 2012, Addis Ababa,

The International AGU Chapman Conference on "Longitude and Hemispheric
Dependence of Space Weather" will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, November
12-16, 2012. The conference will focus on two overarching themes: A) How does
the ionospheric response to major solar events depend on hemisphere and
longitude; and B) Expand the study of space weather to include day-to-day
ionospheric variability, i.e., to those times when solar and geomagnetic
activities are moderate, and forcing from the lower atmosphere drives a lot
of the variability. The latter will include examining the cause of longitude
and hemispheric dependence in total electron content (TEC) and occurrence of
plasma density irregularities. The conference will include six main science
topics (1) Hemispherical Dependence of Magnetospheric Energy Injection, (2)
Longitude and Hemispheric Dependence of Storm-Enhanced Densities (SED), (3)
Response to New Time-History of Solar Flares, (4) Quiet-Time Longitude
Spatial Structure, (5) Temporal Response to the Lower-Atmosphere
Disturbances, and (6) Climatology of TEC and Scintillation in Different

   The Earth-Sun Systems Exploration conferences focus on a cross-
disciplinary examination of coupling from Solar observations to the solar
wind, through the magnetosphere and the ionosphere. The Fifth Conference, to

the coupled system. Thus the spectrum of “Earth-Sun Disturbances: Weak,

Session Description: The LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) is a next-generation
radio telescope which utilises thousands of stationary dipoles and tiles to
observe celestial phenomena. This session is intended for the joint
communities of NAM/GAG/UKSP/MIST to learn about the developments of LOFAR
including updates on the status of the system and its current scientific
capabilities, the early science results from all aspects of its applications
and operation, as well as the upcoming opportunities for general “open skies”
observing. The LOFAR dipoles and tiles are grouped into various 'stations'
which are centred on the Netherlands with additional stations across
Europe. In The Netherlands, a total of 40 LOFAR stations are nearing
completion with an initial eight international stations already deployed in
Germany, France, Sweden, and the UK (and at least four more expected between
Poland and Germany by the end of 2013). With its dense core array and
interferometric baselines of up to 1,000 km, LOFAR has the potential to
achieve both unparalleled sensitivity (sub-mJy) and spatial resolution (sub-
arcsecond) in this largely-unexplored low-frequency radio regime (~10 MHz to
250 MHz). It is also a key pathfinder for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA)
and its technology and design remit are presently being used as an initial
test bed for the future EISCAT_3D system to be based across northern
Scandinavia. LOFAR will be able to survey wide areas of the sky all at once
and will open up a new window for astronomers, astrophysicists, cosmologists,
and solar/space scientists alike. Areas of science which can be explored
with LOFAR include, but are not limited to, the Epoch of Re-ionisation (EoR),
Pulsars, Transients, Cosmic Rays, Magnetism, deep Extra-Galactic Surveys, and
also studies of the Sun, the Solar Atmosphere/Solar Wind, Space Weather, and
the Earth’s Ionosphere/Atmosphere. In summary, the session is designed for
showcasing LOFAR’s scientific potential and progress to date. The session
should include a LOFAR overview and specifics of LOFAR commissioning, current
status, scientific and technical capabilities, and upcoming
opportunities. We solicit contributions from any/all of the science areas
that will be covered by the observational capabilities of LOFAR which would
include contributed abstracts on the early space, solar, solar wind,
ionosphere, and solar system studies, the early results from the galactic and
extra-galactic science which will also include pulsars, magnetism, cosmology
and the Epoch of Re-ionisation (EoR) work to date.

5. CUA Space Sciences & Space Weather Graduate Program

Since the introduction of the telegraph, the first large-scale electrical
system in the nineteenth century, eruptive solar events have had an adverse
impact on society. Today these phenomena are called “space weather” that
entails the energetic interactions between the Sun, the near-earth
environment, and the earth itself. We have recently seen great scientific
advances in understanding space weather. Quickly maturing space science
models, along with new observational space-borne and ground-based facilities
have transformed a wonder of the past into a modern quantitative field of
physics with true predictive power.

Starting January 2012 The Catholic University of America (CUA) Department of
Physics will provide Masters and PhD graduate training through its new Space
Sciences & Space Weather Graduate Program. Graduates will obtain Masters and
PhD degrees in Physics under the new program. The new training is designed to
address the growing US national and international need for highly skilled
space weather scientists, who understand how to apply scientific knowledge to
mitigate the impacts of the hazardous space environment on humans and manmade
technology in space and on the surface of the Earth. The Space Sciences &
Space Weather Graduate Program is designed to provide the needed 21st century
training for scientists capable of making connection from basic space science
research to applications and operational space weather services.

Students participating in the new program will: 1) develop quantitative
understanding of space physical phenomena, 2) learn to carry out
independent scientific research, 3) understand how space weather impacts
society, 4) understand how basic research can feed into applications and
applications into operational space weather products and 5) understand the
importance of interdisciplinary nature of space weather and space sciences in
general.

The program is a collaborative activity between NASA Goddard Space Flight
Center (GSFC) and CUA. Some of the instruction and intern opportunities
will take place at NASA GSFC. Important components of the training will
include joint space science research projects with GSFC’s Heliophysics
Science Division as well as operational space weather forecasting experience
at GSFC Space Weather Center. CUA will provide competitive stipends to
highly qualified applicants.
